Hung...
ArtLife Institute, Kingston, NY February 2024
"Hung..." grew out of a prior workshop as an outcome & site specific durational investigation rooted in a seriously genuine need for clean belongings. Unexpectedly, it also became a water based ritual resulting in physical cleansing and emotional renewal. This most recent iteration developed from elements of the 9 day intensive 'Time.Space.Nothing.' with artist Franko B. 'Hung...' evolving as I explored the simple act of using water for washing items needed for personal care and everyday use.
Art ArtLife Kingston - This version was a 4 hour durational and loving note to myself and other land justice and earth based stewards for the 2023-2024 growing & harvesting farm season. After a transformative summer escaping a dead end position and becoming a cannabis farmhand that season, I centered QTBIPOC folx in requesting clothing contributions from my land based community. These garments would be manually washed in love, care and gratitude for the sweat and labor put into the land and harvest that fed respective community.
In focusing on water, deeper explorations included magnifying the act of washing - with an oculus mic amplifying the washing sounds and broadcasting the tones to the public with Pirate Jenny's signature pirate radio. An unexpected chorus of water on plastic emerged throughout the piece solidifying the element of water beyond a vehicle for renewal and a surprise key player of sound design within and act of care and rigour while surrounded by and interacting with loving community.

Hung...
Gnesta, Sweden, July 2019
This work in progress was performed as a site specific moment/yearning/love letter to Gnesta, Sweden during a visit...
Towards the end of my stay in the village of Gnesta, I stepped further into my curiosities about Home as performance site/platform for domesticity and viewer interaction within my own vulnerabilities. Viewer/participants were invited to bring clothes in need of washing and to join myself and others in the kitchen while I asked questions about their relationship to the fabric. The rhythm and ritual of water was a constant to the different exchanges and unexpected, shared narratives of fabric within life experience. Viewers were invited to come and pick up their line dried/hung items the next day while I was en route back to the States. Hand washing my own and others clothes before viewers evoked thoughts, stories and memories on old sayings; loaded with meanings, political layers and socio-cultural connotations.
